Two Festivals in One Week
Haiti’s Department of the Northwest was host to two festivals in one week. The Discovery
Festival took place on December 5th and 6th, 2006 at Môle Saint-Nicolas On first day of the
festival, Gracia Delva’s group Mass Compas enthralled the inhabitants of Môle Saint-Nicolas,
people from Port-au-Prince, and those from the Diaspora who made the trip. It was an
extraordinary evening.
The next day, on the 6th of December, on the beach, several hundred people had enjoyed
themselves with musical groups Rev, Mass Compas, Cynique Musique (a local group from
Port-de-Paix), and Backup. This first edition of the Discovery Festival was organized on the
occasion of the 514th anniversary of the discovery of Haiti by Christopher Columbus. It was
at Môle Saint-Nicolas that he disembarked on the 5th of December, 1492.
The second festival, in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, was held from
the 7th through the 9th of December in Port-de-Paix. People from all over the country, as
well as the Diaspora, danced to the best hits of Mass Compas, Cynique Musique, New Look,
T-Vice, etc.
These two festivals, organized by the office of the Senator of the Northwest, Evalliere
Bauplan, and Solo Production, were a success. They have promised to hold these festivals on
a yearly basis.
